My story

It happened during my senior year in college. After building a software allowing users to create flowers with just mouse clicks, the artist in me decided that she also wanted to become a computer scientist. However, it was too late for me to change or add a new major. It was also impossible for me as an international student to extend my study without financial aid.

Nevertheless, after a year of working, I have applied and been successfully admitted to the renowned Master program in Computer Science at University of Massachusetts, Amherst. It came to me as a huge surprise because with my Art, Dance, and Economics undergraduate degrees, I must have the most non-traditional Computer Science background out of all candidates.

I still financially struggle now as I am ineligible for loans to finance my study without an U.S. citizen as a cosigner. One day, when I was writing wishes to my friend on a handmade Vietnamese birthday pop-up card, a light bulb turned on inside my head: Why do I not purchase and sell these cards to support the Vietnamese artisans, bring smiles to people who receive them, and raise fund to become a computer engineer? That was how this pilot project came to life. Since then, I have been doing research and working with Vietnamese wholesale companies to determine the costs for the project.

In order to push this project off the ground, I will need to raise $850:

Cost breakdown:

1000 cards (size appr 4x6 in): $450
International Shipping Fee: $200
Online Transaction Fee (for suppliers and buyers): $200
Total: $850

If this project becomes successful, I hope one day I will be able to create an organization to mentor and provide funding for girls and women who want to enter engineer-related fields regardless of their ages, income, and nationalities.

Thank you
